My family and I traveled for the holidays and this painting also took a while as it is larger than my daily paintings at 18" x 24". This quiet backwater is the perfect habitat for wood ducks and although I felt the painting was strong enough on it's own without wildlife in it, a single drake wood duck swimming across the glassy water breathed life into this peaceful scene. This painting will be available this month at the Orland Art Center in Orland, CA. The opening reception is tomorrow night(Friday night) at the center from 3-7pm. In the Willamette Valley there are a lot of blackberries and the pheasant feel safe hiding within their thorny confines. While in Maryland, I got several great photographs of pintails in various positions which were laid out in a sketch. The original plan was to use the Maryland background but after hunting at a friend's place this past weekend, I decided to use his pond as the backdrop. This bird is not alarmed as he flits through the fall foliage. The moon helps add to the high clear sky and helps to show how low the geese are flying. Ducks Unlimited is one of the leading conservation groups in the country and is responsible for millions of acres of restored and enhanced wetlands. This is a common sight during fall and winter in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. These geese are primarily cacklers as they are small and have darker bodies than most of the other subspecies. In hand, they are almost the size of a large mallard. There distinct cackling call (as opposed to the deeper honk of the larger subspecies) is what gives them their name. This painting will also be available at the <a href="http://www.waterfowlfestival.org/">Waterfowl Festival</a> this weekend. It sparked a feverish inspiration that resulted in a painting marathon lasting until 2:30am last night and this is the end result. As I painted, I was continually reminded of some the classic etchings by Roland Clark that I used to ogle at as a kid. Whether it is a small bit in the distance or the subject of the painting, it is almost always present in most of my paintings. The feathers of ducks are better than Goretex because they preen themselves with an oil produced by a gland near their rump. This causes water to bead up and roll off. The day I was out photographing these Brant the wind became so strong it was picking the side of the shack off of it's foundation! Because of the wind, many types of waterfowl flew close including greenwing teal. What struck me about this composition is the depth created by the wispy seed heads of the phragmites, a cattail-like reed common to wetland environments. For me, predawn is the most exciting time in a refuge as the wildlife is the most active and although there are not any birds in this painting, they certainly were present on this morning. The stark contrasting head makes these sparrow easy to identify as they are found throughout the country. One of the predawn mornings found me in an area outside the Hoodoos. I could hear numerous bugles, one of the hauntingly beautiful sounds in nature, and was catching glimpses of the cow elk as the sun started to rise but I couldn't see the bulls. After leaving the rental car parked onthe side of the road I headed up over a small ridge into a bowl towards the bugling elk. I positioned myself up against a lodgepole pine and let out a small bugle of my own through my Primos call. The entire area lit up with bugles close and far! There were three bulls in the immediate area and I was caught in the middle. One came into sight - a very healthy 6x6 bull. The whites of his eyes were blood red, he was drooling and he was angry! I was only able to snap a couple photos before freezing up against the tree, knowing I was in trouble. The two other bulls had moved in closer on the other side of the tree and I was in the middle. The one thing that stood out to me was how powerful these animals looked and how quickly they could move <br /> <br />I hoped they were only paying attention to each other as they bugled back and forth. My thoughts were: <br /> <br />1. The car would be parked on the side of the road for days before somebody might notice. This was Yellowtone and people leave cars all the time to go for hikes. <br /> <br />2. Rachelle wouldn't worry for a while because I wasn't expected home for days and had poor cell reception - not a good situation! <br /> <br />Fortunately, they were only paying attention to each other as I stayed as rigid as the tree. When they moved off to my side, I slowly backed out of the situation and when I got back over the ridge I felt relief as the bugles started to sound distant. <br /> <br />With a bow or a rifle, I would have felt completely different, but armed only with a camera changed the entire situation. Regardless, it was still exhilerating and this painting is what is coming from the experience. It is not exactly what I experienced- the cows weren't in front of the bull, but he was there. <br /> <br />This painting has been in the works for a while and should be completed sometime this fall. The sheer power behind thousands of cubic feet of moving water changes landscapes. In this image the water dives over submerged boulders to create a backflow that curls constantly. Kayakers can find places like this and ride the wave like a surfer in the ocean. Personally, I can sit and watch and listen to the force of nature and let time slip by. <br /> <br /><em>Of note for the those collectors who enjoy acquiring firsts:</em> this is the first pastel drawing that I have done. I enjoyed the way the chalky medium blended so easily to create certain effcts. Today, I received an email from somebody named Charles Phey from Hawaii. He inquired about two of my paintings in very broken English and wanted to send a certified cashiers check and a shipper to pick up the work. So, he wanted my address and phone number as well. I have had this happen before so my internal alarm went off.<br /><br />The first time it happened was from a famous English soccer player (Wayne Rooney) who also wrote with broken English. Obviously something seemed off. Wayne Rooney speaks perfect English. I didn't answer the email, but the check showed up anyway FedEx Saturday Ovenight delivery. I took it to see if it was ok thinking 'Hey, what if?' and stood there while the teller and manager both looked at me like I was a criminal. I explained that I wanted to make sure it was cashable and somebody was using it to purchase my artwork. Needless to say, it was a learning experience.<br /><br />I am not sure why people are targeting artists, but here is a link to the blog of another artist whom this recently happened to - <a href="http://www.markfineart.ca/2011/07/charles-phey-fraud-alert/">Mark Johnson</a>. It used to be more pink in tone and I felt it needed more of the oranges of sunset. This scene drake pintail feeds alone on shallow sheetwater to store energy for breeding activity and migration. My wife pointed out the same thing so I kicked around a couple of ideas and decided to add some bald eagles circling and a single gull on the higher rock. Eagle are very common in this part of the world and can even outnumber gulls in places. Another touch up is more 'splash and crash' given to the wave. This is a serious and possibly fatal illness that affects the outer lining of the brain and is contagious mostly through contact with saliva. Malea is a wonderful, happy baby and her condition was so serious that she needed to be airlifted to Doernbecher's Hospital in Portland. She is now facing the amputation of one of her feet, blisters all over her body, and at least another month in the hospital not to mention possible future complications. The adult was catching insects nearby and would frequently return to feed the anxiously awaiting chicks. However, in the spring, the males are a showy splash of white, charcoal and yellow. They are quite numerous at times and will forage almost anywhere quickly changing their diet from insects to berries, then back to insects again. These ducks are stunning and almost gaudy they are so decorated. They prefer wetlands next to flooded timber because they nest in trees and will even perch in trees. These large owls are common throughout the United States and it is one of the top birds in the food chain. They will kill other birds of prey including hawks and falcons while on the nest and are one of the only birds that will eat a skunk. It was interesting painting this without a background as there is almost an optical illusion of the feet gripping a branch. I tried to make the bird as three dimensional as possible and as realistic as possible. The art in the painting, I feel, is in the bird's crouched positioning which gives it life. When I saw this bird originally the dark background helped the brilliant colors to stand out. These birds have been aided by a strong conservation program that has installed bluebird boxes throughout the country to help with their numbers. The more aggresive tree swallows and European starlings tend to take over their natural nesting sites (and even the boxes). Perhaps, he came to take a drink or maybe there was a mouse or vole in the surrounding area that he was hunting. Leopards are difficult to see in the wild because they are very elusive and mostly nocturnal. They are known for living in the sub-Sahara region of Africa but occur in many habitats and throughout various countries including the Russian Far East where temperatures routinely dip below freezing during the winter months. I observed this wood duck just a couple of days ago and because it is Spring, he is most likely already paired off with a female. On the blog below, you can see the original version. A wood duck has been added to the mix of waterfowl as I had seen one in this spot on this particular day. They are very skittish and took off right away, but the handsome male adds a nice bit of color to the painting. I also put him closer to the shore to add just a bit more depth to the water. An important part of this painting and a big reason for adding the various species (besides added interest) is the fact that when the weather gets cold, ducks like open patches of water. Ringneck ducks are diving ducks that frequently visit the same shallower habitat that other dabbling ducks visit. Dabbling ducks are aptly named as the tip up to feed like the female pintail in this painting. They are unable to dive great depths because their feet are located in more of a forward position on their bodies. This also enables them to jump straight off the water when startled. I recently visited the coast on an incredibly windy day and took some pictures of this scene. The wind seemed to be blowing the wavetops off and the rain was sideways! In this case, the heron is more at rest as it's head is tucked as opposed to their erect posture when stalking. Herons are common throughout the United States and are common in Oregon. However, I saw this particular heron at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on Maryland's famed eastern shore. Eurasian wigeon are becoming more common in the United States and can be found among large flocks of the American version of the species - mostly along the west and east coasts. These birds most likely have migrated from Siberia and Iceland. In my hometown, there are about five that regularly winter on a pond at a local park along with several hundred of their American counterparts. Egrets seem to evoke a sense of peace and solitude which is in contrast to the dark clouds above. I saw this particular bird at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge where they are common visitors. Although they are woodpeckers, flickers mostly choose to forage on the ground for ants and other bugs, which makes them so hard to see. Here one briefly lands on a picket fence before moving on. They were first introduced in the Bahamas and have since been spreading throughout the United States. There is now a permanent population in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. I saw this particular bird in my neighborhood. They are larger than mourning doves but still have the classic dove shape. Remarques are similar to my daily paintings in that they are miniature and take about a day to complete. However, they pose a bit more of a challenge in that they are so small it gets hard to correctly accomplish the level of detail I like. This area has special meaning to me as a grew up hunting and exporing the marsh, which is one of the largest brackish water marshes in the United States. As a kid, I used to explore every nook and cranny in search of anything I could find be it different birds (and there are alot) or small mammals. Originally, this painting only had one woodpecker in it (the one on the side), but it seemed too rigid. After thinking about how to add more interest, I decided to add the second bird which is strategically placed to move the viewers eye around the painting. The bird is looking toward the one on the left and the angle of its body posture lends to the directional movement.
